Ice Heave Repairs
March 26 2024Did you have ice heaves pushing on your part of the shoreline this winter?
Do you plan on repairing the shore to its Fall 2023 state?
Do you plan on bringing in contractors or heavy equipment to do your repair work?
If you answered "yes" to the second and/or third questions, you may need a permit from Alberta Environment and Parks (AEP)!
The land between the high-water mark of the shoreline and the lake itself (basically, the shore area) is owned by the Province. Any work done in this area requires permission under the Public Lands Act, and possibly the Water Act.
While the Province prefers that shorelines are left in a natural state, they will consider applications to do work on the shore. Depending on your work, you will need one of two permissions:
TFA (Temporary Field Authorization) - This is free, and valid for one lake season. Applications are submitted to and approved by the local AEP office in Red Deer. Applications are emailed to RedDeer.LUApps@gov.ab.ca.
Disposition - This is applied for online, and has both an application fee and an annual renewal fee. These are used for more significant and permanent lakeshore work.
If you're doing work on the shore, confirm what you need to apply by contacting Jeff Froese from AEP at Jeffrey.Froese@gov.ab.ca or 403-340-7866.
Information on TFA can be found at https://www.alberta.ca/temporary-fields-authorizations-contacts.
Should there be suspected non-compliance, report it to 310-LAND (https://www.alberta.ca/report-illegal-activity-call-310-land.aspx).
